New Fiction: Shiner

I have some new fiction out now with Barren, a West Michigan publication based out of Kalamazoo that publishes some really amazing stuff, and Issue 21 is no exception.

The theme of the issue is Rebirth, and the fiction editors described the story as “quiet and fresh…well written and wonderfully human…and absolutely beautiful.” Queue the obligatory midwestern aw shucks-ing. I think the story fits the theme to a T.

If you’re so inclined, head on over and check out Shiner, a short story about a mother dealing with the loss of her husband and how to handle two young sons in the aftermath. Mostly it’s about how we connect with one another and if it’s possible to shift expectations in how we imagine each other to be. It’s also about a trampoline, so, you know, there’s a little extra incentive.
